I am a member of the Alta Canyon Advisory Committee formed last year. You previously heard some suggestions for amenities to be included in the expansion of the center. I don't expect this suggestion to be a convincing factor, but I have one that I have seen implemented in another state.
The large open space between the new building and the pool anticipated by Option D affords an amenity space that is not under consideration. I expect it would be expensive, and generate limited revenue: The area could be configured for an Ice Sheet for casual recreation. Too small for ice sports, but perhaps large enough for casual use. Logistically, the cement would be removed, and refrigeration, water, and drainage pipes installed before new cement is put down in a shallow bowl. The facilities could be housed in the same building as the pool filter, heater and sanitation functions.
The minimal revenue would come from skate rental when the facility is open, but I hope there is no security fence.
My reference is The Rink at Lawrence Plaza, in Bentonville AR. I am drawn to it because I became aware of it about the same time Sandy developed the Splash Pad at Amphitheater Park. The Rink seems to have a removable half-wall height surrounding the rice, and it is a splash pad in the summer.
When Alta Canyon was built, it was likely a needed venue for fitness and swimming. Now there are many other private facilities that offer gym equipment, personal training, swim lessons, trampolines, children's fun zones, pickleball, etc. Sadly, I suspect that if Alta Canyon is rebuilt or remodeled and sets prices at what they need to be self-funding, I doubt it can compete with the others. If naming rights will support the remodel, without requiring taxpayer money, that is fine. I don't use Alta Canyon and no one I know uses it so I don't want to pay for anything beyond what is necessary for the function of Sandy government. Otherwise, keep the most popular and financially viable parts and do a bare-bones remodel to house Parks and Rec and provide flex space for needs like Arts Guild rehearsals that can"t be held at Mount Jordan Middle, basketball teams, etc. PS Sandy City contributed a lot of money to build the theater at Mount Jordan. Is the scheduling issue with them caused by an increase in Arts Guild productions or their refusal to honor their promises?
